De-escalation


Description
This is a full-day training delivered by ABACUS.

The De-escalation course will teach you a safe, non-harmful behavior management system designed to help human service professionals provide for the best possible care and welfare of disruptive, assaultive and out of control persons – even during their most violent moments. The Certificate is valid for two years.

Learning Outcomes

Participants will:
• Understand the role of communication in de-escalation
• Be aware of the messages conveyed by their body language and that of others
• Be able to use appropriate active listening skills to understand the concerns of escalated
others and to engage and intervene
• Learn a variety of tools and ideas that help to de-escalate, and use them effectively
• Know how to ensure the safety of themselves and others throughout
• Have an opportunity to practice de-escalation with other participants, using an
appropriate scenario, with knowledge gained from the course and gain feedback
• Increase their confidence in dealing with tense/difficult situations in future

Course content
• The role of communication in de-escalation; Role of biological reactions and social
learning,
• The consequences of Perception and perspective
• Understanding REBT using scenarios; Communication skills (active listening and body
language)
• De-escalation strategies in detail, and practice in roleplays
• Exercises and activities to assist learning.
